El Toro fell 41-21 to the Eastlake Titans in Chula Vista. El Toro had stretches in the game where everything was clicking, but those stretches were short circuited one way or another. In spite of this, the Chargers on offense moved the ball effectively for large portions of the game, but were limited to 3 touchdown passes. El Toro, trailing 21-7 at the half, pulled to within a touchdown twice, and almost yet again a third time before being turned away on the Eastlake 2 yard line. A score at that point would have cut the Titan lead to 6 with plenty of time remaining in the 4th quarter. The Titans tacked on late scores, but the game was much closer than the final score indicated.

Defensively the Chargers made tackles for losses and would place Eastlake’s offense in difficult positions, but the Titans were able to find a way to make a big play when they needed it. AJ Aguilar led the team with 11 tackles, 3 for losses and was flying to the football all game. Defensive lineman Andrew Aguilar was in the backfield often, and forced a fumble that was recovered by Noah Aguilar on the first Eastlake drive of the second half. Andrew finished unofficially with 5 tackles. Chris Sawaya had 5 1/2 tackles himself and was active making plays. DE’s Robert Brandenburg and Jeremiah Allen finished with 8 tackles and Brandenburg forced a fumble that Eastlake was fortunate to fall on. Artie Varela had multiple tackles including 1 for a loss and a clutch break-up of a Titan pass on 3rd down. Multiple tackles were also turned in by Patrick Kotnik and Jacob Williams, 1 for a loss of yardage by Kotnik.

The Offensive Line did an outstanding job once again providing time to throw and allowing the offense to accumulate 385 yards in the air. Senior Center Kevin Frum (who also played linebacker), Tackles Conrad Frick and Kyle Whitesides, along with Guards Dominick Vasquez and Angel Rodriguez were rock solid up front in pass protection against a big Eastlake defensive line. Football is a big man’s game and these Chargers in the trenches played well as a unit. Wide Receiver Austin Derrico finished with 8 catches on the night, including 3 TD’s for 152 receiving yards and he also had another bundle of return yards on special teams. Noah Aguilar had a huge game with 10 receptions for 153 yards, and had a diving interception on defense as he undercut a receiver for the pick (Noah also added a fumble recovery on defense for good measure). Ricky Silva caught the ball 7 times and carried it 11 times for 60 plus yards including a nice burst up the sidelines after a catch for a 23 yard pick up. Marcus Blevins averaged over 5 yards a carry and had big first down scamper to keep a drive alive in the second half. Shane McLaughlin returned an Eastlake kick-off 75 yards to the Titan 10 and added 4 catches. Chris Sawaya also had a nice reception in traffic. QB Cooper Jones finished 31 of 53 for 385 yards, 3 TD’s and 1 INT and spread the football around to the Charger receivers. In the kicking game, Matthew Freem hit his PAT’s and handled all of the kick-off and punt game duties this week.

Next Friday, September 9th, the Chargers look to put it all together against Corona Del Mar. They will be on the road. Check the schedule on www.etfootball.com for details
